The Great Western Railway Company was originally formed in 1833 to serve the South West of England and improve links with London. The first trains ran three years later. Engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel who declared it to be "the finest work in the kingdom," it was the brainchild of Bristol merchants determined to keep Bristol as the second port in the country and the key link for American trade under threat from Liverpool, emerging as a more attractive port. Today the Great Western Main Line is a vitally important route for commuters travelling from Swindon and Reading into London as well as delivering holiday makers on to the South West. In this version of Great Western you can travel from London Paddington to Swindon along a 77 mile stretch of track that still enjoys some of the astonishing engineering feats created by Brunel.
