The Lockheed Constellation, nicknamed
Connie, is, probably, one of the
most elegant aircraft designs ever. Its
tapered wings with elliptical tips, inherited
from the famed Lockheed P-38, its multiple
tail vertical surfaces (also found in
the P-38), the curved shape of its fuselage
and the tall landing gears gave it a unique
silhouette.

A
Brief History
In 1939, The Lockheed Corporation
started development of a long-range,
four-engine, forty-passenger aircraft,
upon requirement from Trans Continental
and Western Air. Soon after production
of the L-49 started, the needs of
the US Army Air Corps during WWII,
made the aircraft emerge as military
transport, designated C-69.
Only a few flew with the US insignia,
at the later stages of the war.
They were at the end of the war
re-converted to the civilian L-049
version. First commercial flight
took place in 1946 between New York
and Bermuda. Later units were produced
for true civilian use, being designated
L-649, and capable for up to 81
passengers.
The next version of the series was
the L-749, provided with
greater capacity fuel tanks in the
wings for longer range, so the Constellation
begun to be used widely in Transatlantic
routes.
The L-749a, which is the
version modelled here, had a stronger
landing gear for increased weights.
This version was also adopted for
use by USAF as C-121,
and even was used as a presidential
transport!
